A few years ago, I owned a pet. Now I adopt an animal, and become a pet parent. Well, at least I don’t have to send my cats to college, although I do understand that dogs go to school. I wonder if they get their master’s degree. Then I read this week that if one grows plants, one is called a plant parent. Not sure what that makes me for my children. I’m thinking omnipotent ruler, but it may be maid and chauffer. Who we are in a relationship is often defined by form, function and most of all, commitment to the wellbeing of the other. I think in part, that is what this scripture is about. God wants us to live in the security and joy of a relations of love through Jesus Christ. The true blessing is having the knowledge of God’s commitment of love to us, and the opportunity to live into that promise of joy and peace.
