In The Midst Of All The Noise and Excitement

In The Midst Of All The Noise and Excitement

Telling family stories around the lunch table, Kim shared this. She was five, when her parents contracted a company to actually move the house to a new lot, just outside of town. She was allowed to watch from a safe distance as the house was jacked up and placed on a flatbed for transport. She really wanted to go and watch it being placed on its new foundation, but it was a little dangerous, so arrangements were made for her to stay with one of the neighbors. She made the best of it. She asked the neighbor if she could just sit outside and wait. “Of course, here is a little chair, just stay away from the area where the house had been, too much debris and possibilities for a little girl to get hurt.” Taking the little chair, she placed her self a safe distance from the now vacant lot, and waited, and waited and waited. Finally, the neighbor came out and asked her what she was doing. She said, “Johnny,” her twelve-year-old brother, “said that they the mover guys were going to come back and get the basement, and I should stay here to watch.” The neighbor smiled and said, “Let’s go get some lemon aid and cookies.”

In part, that is what this scripture is about. God wants us to grow in faith, wisdom and knowledge. Just as we start off with milk, we learn and grow, becoming able to deal with more complex ideas and experiences. Part of our growth is sifting out the truth from the tricks, the hole in the ground from the strong foundation of God’s promise and love. And sometimes, in the midst of all the noise and excitement, we need to take a moment to enjoy a cookie and figure out the truth from the trick. God wants you to grow in wisdom, joy and love.

Blessings,
