Hang Your Hat On It!

Hang Your Hat On It!

An exercise bike has many uses: in the bed room – a coat and hat hanger, in the office – a book shelf, in the basement – a dust catcher, a guilt prompter – a reminder of our promise to lose ten pounds, and on rarer occasions – an instrument of exercise. So, you can imagine my surprise when, driving down the street, I saw an exercise bike in the middle of a flower bed being used as a yard ornament. What an ingenious idea! The bike has become a trellis for ivy, a landing spot for birds and butterflies, a target for a dog’s lifted leg, and of course a center piece for flowers. I couldn’t see if they had removed the pedals, but it is a flower garden, so it will have new petals all summer. No more guilt for not exercising, the bike has become an ornament, an object of conversation.

In part, I think that is what the scripture is about. For so many people faith and the opportunity to live in a loving, life giving relationship with God through Jesus Christ, has become a bit of a joke. The purpose and hope of faith has become a political slogan, an excuse to have a holiday, an ornament of times gone – promises not kept. Christ continues to be there for us, offering us love and joy – though His commitment to us. And that my friend, you can hang your hat on!

Blessings,
