Is today really Ground Hogs’ Day? You know, that time in Pennsylvania when normal people of good sense dawn tuxedos and top hats to consult a very large squirrel about the arrival of spring. Makes sense to me, after all, the Ground Hog has about a 50 – 50 shot at being right. I do the same thing, not with squares, but with the weather channel. Still, about a 50 – 50 shot at being right. One of the main differences is that I don’t have to become formally attired.
I think in part that is what this scripture is about. People want to control their lives, so they seek out those who they believe will have the wisdom, knowledge and power to tell them what to do and when to do it. Paul tells us that God is in control of all creation, and that God will give us the wisdom to deal with life and the future if we simply listen in love and faith. That is one of God’s gifts to us, the opportunity to grow, study, listen and expand our knowledge of God world. Now that is a great reason to wear a top hat.
